We found our rat, Nuuk, dead in her cage tonight. She was lying unaturally and looked like she had been cramping or in pain. She most likely had a brain haemorrhage. She was still soft when we put her in a box with clothes and some sponge-ish bedding. There was nothing wrong with her yesterday. We got her 1½ year ago from a petstore, and she was already full grown then. When we bought her, there was nothing wrong other than a little nervousness, but when we got her home, she immediately started to bite everyone who touched her. We did play with her, but mostly inside her cage with peas and stuff, as none of us could handle her without bleeding and stressing her. I have a few pics to share. She was so sweet and nice, when you handled her like she wanted to. I really miss her. RIP, Nuuk, you'll always be in our hearts.

Aww, I'm so sorry Vette. It's so hard to lose a pet, expecially when it's unexpected. *huge hugs*

Oh, heavens, Vette! I felt sick reading this, honestly. Hugest hugs for you, it's just awful losing a pet so suddenly...
I'm sure she's gone to a wonderful place and will have nothing but lovely memories of the people who cared for her so much.
*hugest-hugest hugs*

Thanks guys, I'm still trying to realise she isn't there anymore. *sigh* I reakky appreciate all your kin words <3 There's 9 gerbils eager to play, and Silke's been acting more cute than usual; when she comes out of her cage she sits down and wait for me to come pet her, then she licks my hair, arm, fingers, forehead, lol. She's beginning to love snuggling. Life goes on, it's so great to hae other pets helping you get through the rough times.

The last pets I lost were my hermit crabs, and I was devastated, but my kitties helped me through it. Did you bury her? When I lose pets, it helps me to have a little ceremony to say goodbye. *more hugs*

Actually, we couldn't bury her. Either we had to keep her dead in the appartment for a few days (which I couldn't live with, she didn't look peacefull at all ) or go out to a random park where I know a dog or cat would dig her out. All parks here etc are full of people. *sigh*

Ah. As a fellow apartment-dweller, I totally understand that. I generally bury pets at my mom or dad's, since they both have yards. For my bigger pets (two cats and a dog) I plan to have them cremated and put in little urns....money allowing, of course.
There's some company who can turn cremated ashes from humans or animals into a manmade diamond (cubic zirconia). It's pricey, but an interesting idea.
