Yes, it's time for a spotlight on the most famous fakie of them all, the one even non-fakie collectors want in their herd - Princess Rinse n' Spit!
According to Ahrian's Fakie Guide, PRnS' unusual name was coined by Lady Minty. She was of course, retailed under a different name. According to recent MOC photos coming from Dutch Arena member Rejenveertje, she is in fact a dreadfully common fakie name - a 'Pretty Pony'. In these pics she comes in a plastic box not too dissimilar from 2003 G3 release ponies. While I don't remember what the retail name of my childhood PRnS was called, I have a vague memory that she was sold on a card.
Rejenveertje's photos:
PRnS is a rather quirky member of the fakie world, modelled from Posey's trotting pose, but with a light-up heart on her forehead that looks very close to the Brush n' Grow Princess Ponies, and a fantastic open mouth - with teeth! These teeth, considered scary by some, are probably her most noticable characteristic.
Her flowers - available in various shades of white, pink and green - on her DS rump and NDS shoulder were designed to be squeezed, like vintage Talking Ponies and Buddy L ponies. When squeezed, she'd make trotting noises and the heart on top of her head would flash. Very few PRnS ponies are found by collectors in working order; along with the Buddy Ls, there is a definite age limit to her speaking mechanism.
Her speaker is pretty similar to the Buddy L and Talking Ponies:
On the underside of her feet are the words 'Made in China', like many vintage and new fakies, and the letters 'M.A.' Which makes a lot of sense, given that the company that released Rejenveertje's MIB ponies above is 'Mei Ah' - which suggests that PRnS may have been released by the same company globally.
She has been discovered in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia, so while she is arguably the most desired fakie amongst collectors (what's a fakie herd without one?), she's not as hard to find as some regionally-exclusive fakies of the same time period and does appear in ebay lots reasonably often. I recieved mine as a gift from a friend of the family in about 1992-1993, the same time as the vintage G1-styled ponies were in stores here in Australia, as were many late 80s US Hasbro ponies and 1992 UK Hasbro ponies - as was the case in Europe, MLP was still retailing strongly here. I don't know if she was retailed in stores at an earlier date elsewhere; if anyone else owns a childhood PRnS, we'd love to know when you bought her!
PRnS is available in several different colours. Orange, green and white are the most common, followed by pink. Blue is a very rare and sought-after colour (I believe I am the only current and active collector in the community who owns a blue one); there is also an equally rare purple one, owned by swancrossing18 on the Arena and pictured below in the company of green and pink PRnSs:
The white PRnS is arguably the most common; a curious feature about her is that she is always released with pale pink yarn hair (the others have nylon hair matching their body colour.) While there is one famous photo of her with purple/pink nylon hair (owned by allymer) she is, in fact, a rehair.
The photo of the yarn-haired white PRnS below (with the cutest custom baby!) belongs to RavenclawPrefect on the Arena:
The interesting thing about the white yarn-haired PRnS is that I believe she was never released in Australia, whereas the other colours (at least, pink, blue, green) were.
Another interesting feature is Mei Ah's use of the common fake Remco eyes, which she shares in common with several other fakies. It may be that they were all manufactured by the same company, but the lack of MOC proof makes it hard to do anything more than speculate.
MOC, PRnS can sell for up to $30 US. Loose, somewhere between $5-$10 depending on condition and colour. Rare colours - blue and purple - could go up to $20, but it is hard to put a fixed price on them because of their rarity - in more than a year of Arena membership, I have never seen either for sale.
Got any more information about this lovely fakie? Post on this thread and I'll add it in!
